The role is initially offered on a one-year fixed term contract with the possibility of extension.

About Us

With over 115,000 members in 140 countries, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has been at the heart of the mechanical engineering profession since 1847.

We strive to improve the world through engineering by developing engineers, promoting engineering, informing opinion and encouraging innovation.

An integral aspect of our work involves representing the views of our members in public forums, shaping engineering policy and providing advice to the media, employers, government, academic bodies and other institutions.

We are looking for a Policy Officer to join us and support these activities.

The Role

As a Policy Advisor, you will create high-quality engineering and policy content and help to inform opinion in the public engineering arena.

Specifically, you will:

- Assist or lead on producing policy reports and consultation responses
- Present the results of these reports with authority
- Canvas members to gain a strong understanding of their views
- Provide technically robust content to support speeches and presentations
- Advise on the delivery of stakeholder communications and interactions
- Support the development of our strategy and policy development
- Horizon scan for upcoming reports and policy developments that the IMechE should respond to

- Strong IT skills, including proficiency in MS Office
- The ability to demonstrate some knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, policy
- Competence in presenting to the media and fluency with social media

An engineering or other STEM qualification is desirable but not essential. If you do not have a STEM degree you will need to demonstrate competence or experience in working with and drafting technical policy content.

Experience of working in a policy or strategy development role would be beneficial, as would experience of working in policy roles centred on energy, climate change, transport, and/or infectious disease control.

Knowledge of the UK government and politics, as well as an understanding of the professional engineering agenda, would also be an advantage.

Other organisations may call this role Policy Officer, Policy Researcher, Political Liaison Officer.

The Benefits

- Salary of circa £40,000 per annum
- 26 days’ holiday per annum plus Bank Holidays
- An extra day off for your birthday
- Benefits including stakeholder pension scheme, life assurance and private health cover
- Continuous training and career development
- A range of wellbeing benefits to encourage a healthy work-life balance

You will have the chance to help shape the future of our organisation, as well as the future of engineering as a whole, by promoting the interests of our members, providing guidance to influential bodies and campaigning for positive change.

We also offer the ideal environment in which to achieve your goals, including excellent training and development opportunities and a superb range of benefits to support your wellbeing. What’s more, you will have the chance to work alongside some of the best in the industry.

Thank you for your interest in this post. We look forward to receiving your application.
